Boxing: Mayweather to fight Cotto May 5 at MGM

February 02, 2012 11:42 AM by Staff & Wire Reports

Floyd Mayweather came up with a fight for May 5 but again not with Manny Pacquiao. Instead it’s Miguel Cotto at MGM Grand Garden.

Mayweather’s camp announced Wednesday afternoon that the Nevada Athletic Commission has granted him a one-fight license to go toe-to-toe with WBA junior middleweight champion.

"I’m fighting Miguel Cotto on May 5th because Miss Pac Man is ducking me," Mayweather tweeted Wednesday.

Mayweather called out Pacquiao via Twitter last month and Pacman accepted the challenge, but the two camps have had problems finding a promoter that would guarantee a purse in excess of $10 million and a venue to stage the fight.

Mayweather’s license hinges on him reporting to jail June 1 to serve a 90-day sentence for domestic battery, while keeping his nose clean in the interim.

With Mayweather’s jail sentence approaching, it’s now clear we won’t see a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight for a while. Mayweather figures to be at least a 6-1 favorite against Cotto.

"It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder," Mayweather said. "I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again and Cotto’s reign as champion will end on May 5."

Reports indicate that both the undefeated Mayweather and Cotto, who is 37-3 with 30 knockouts, have agreed to Olympic-style drug testing.
