Boxing fans will turn their attention to that WBA (Super) and IBF light welterweight title fight between current champion Amir Khan (26-1-0, 18 KO’s) and Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KO’s).
The bout takes place in Washington D.C. which is the challenger’s home town. Fighting behind enemy lines is nothing new for Khan, who has faced Paulie Malignaggi in New York City and Zab Judah here in Las Vegas.
Even with the home-field edge, odds makers have installed the visitor as a big favorite. Currently Khan is listed as high as a -1100 favorite with the take back on Peterson +700. The over/under is 9½ rounds with the over a -165 favorite.
The odds suggest Khan will retain his title by winning a decision. It’s no secret that Khan is on his way up to 147 lbs. Bigger pay-days and more marquee fights await Khan at the higher weight classes and with his constant struggle to make weight, it’s the obvious move.
Finally, at 24 yrs of age we have yet to see the best that Khan has to offer but from what we’ve seen there is little doubt that he’s a special fighter.
A quick glance at Peterson’s KO ratio suggests he lacks the power necessary to slow Khan down. And fighting at home, I believe we’ll see Peterson more willing to exchange and display his bravado.
In the end, that will ultimately lead to his undoing. Peterson has a tendency to drop his hands extremely low when he tries to open up and load up on shots. He throws some wild hooks and an accurate Khan will find a home for his power shots in the mid to late rounds.
I believe the betting value is on Khan by KO or TKO. And I may take a look at the under later in the week because I expect to see an even better price since most expect the fight to go to a decision.
Going back to last Saturday night in New York, Miguel Cotto got his revenge against Antonio Margarito.
Ringside physicians decided to err on the side of caution rather than allow the fight to continue after the ninth round came to a close. Margarito’s corner protested, stating "that was the best round" and continued pleading along with their fighter for "one more."
The referee called a halt to the fight and rightfully awarded a TKO victory that evened up the score 1-1 after two battles.
Margarito landed 106 more power-punches in the first fight than he did on Saturday night. Back in 2008, Cotto got hit with a total of 237 power-shots over 11 rounds compared to only 131 this time.
Many were anticipating the heavyweight title fight this Saturday between Wladimir Klitschko and Jean Marc Mormeck, but due to emergency surgery just days ago for the champion to remove a kidney stone, it’s been called off for now.
Klitschko was listed as a -5000 favorite against the former cruiser weight so he probably could have fought and won even having undergone surgery.
