Super Bowl Betting Poll February 01, 2012 4:25 PM by Mark Mayer

Being in Las Vegas, it’s easy to forget just how many people are betting the Super Bowl "illegally" around the nation.

A survey released Tuesday from the Atlanta-based Poll Position group found that at least 25 million Americans will bet money on this Sunday’s Patriots-Giants NFL title game being played in Indianapolis.

Eleven percent of respondents said yes, 78% said no and 10% were undecided or had no opinion on the question. With roughly 234 million adults in America, the 11% who said they are betting on the Super Bowl would translate into slightly more than 25 million.

Breaking down the poll farther, 18% percent of men said they would bet on the game, while only 5% of women say they’ll do so. More Democrats (16%) say they’ll bet on the big game than Republicans (12%) and independents (5%).

Of the age group most likely to bet (18-29 years old), 19% say they’ll gamble on the game. Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,145 registered voters nationwide was conducted January 31, 2012 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
