Nearly two decades ago, the Mashantucket Pequot Indian Nation in Connecticut became eligible to build and operate a casino when the courts ruled that since the state permitted and licensed charitable casino games the Indians were entitled to do the same.
That same tactic is being used in South Carolina where the Catawba Indian Nation seeks to have gambling on their 640 acre-reservation.
South Carolina’s laws set rules and regulations for gambling cruise ships. That, say the Catawbas, opens the door for the tribe to expand onsite reservation gambling.
