Kentucky Downs benefits from 'Instant Racing' machines February 20, 2012 8:55 PM by Ray Poirier

Long-time racing executive Corey Johnson was confident Kentucky Downs horse track would benefit from the addition of "Instant Racing" gambling machines. But, the response was even greater than he expected.

So, Johnson went before the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission seeking an additional 75 machines that permit wagering on old horse races, thus making the devices kissing-cousins to slot machines.

The request was approved.

After all, from September 2011, when 200 machines were installed, to January 2012, total wagering surpassed $40 million. The track kept $2.86 million while the state put $603,730 into a racing/breeding fund and another $141,000 into the general fund.
