Members of the Miccosukee Indian tribe of Florida could owe as much as $26 million in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, according to a recent lawsuit.
The tribe is blaming "misleading advice" from former legal counsel Dexter Lehtinen for the tax problem.
Since the tribe is considered a sovereign nation it is not required to pay income tax. However, the IRS says individual members are subject to tax payments.
According to the Miccosukees, more than 100 of its members could owe multi-millions of dollars in back taxes, penalties and interest from money they got from the tribe’s casino west of Miami.
Lehtinen, who represented the tribe from 1992 to 2010, is fighting the suit, claiming the tribe’s new leadership was trying to shift blame to him to cover up mistakes they made. Lehtinen is a former Miami U.S. attorney and the husband of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
