Imagine anyone who took our consensus advice Sunday and bet on Memphis at -240 to simply win its Game 1 against the Los Angeles Clippers. Forget the point spread, consensus said, just win.
Well it sure looked good up 27 at one time and leading by 24 with eight minutes left. Then to quote the legendary Jack Buck, “I don’t believe what I just saw.”
I didn’t think it was possible until Nick Young hit those three 3-pointers in a matter of a minute. You could see then that the Grizzlies were choking it all away. Full credit to the Clippers for never giving up the fight, but you just can’t lose this game. And Memphis did.
Let’s face it, YouTube may be in love with the dunk, but basketball is all about the 3-point line. Teams that can hit the 3 are never out of the game, Memphis for some reason decided that ahead 24 was game, set and match. This sentiment allowed the Clippers to rally and the Grizz could not regain all the ways that built up the 27-point margin.
It’s why you never say never, why you should never throw away your ticket. Big comebacks have become the norm. The Clippers-Grizzlies series now becomes compelling for no other reason than to see if Memphis can shake this one off.
If they don’t, head coach Lionel Hollins will be held accountable. It may not be fair, but that’s the nature of the business these days.

The debut of Bryce Harper was a big time success. The 19-year-old phenom showed in two tense games against the Los Angeles Dodgers that he has the right stuff.
Harper and the center field wall met twice, first when a screaming liner off his bat went for a double and later when he crashed into it on the dead run to make a sensational catch. He took a very close 3-2 pitch for a ball, showing a keen eye, and fired a laser from left field that should have nailed a Dodger runner had the Washington catcher not messed up.
Harper is arguably the greatest physical talent to ever come out of Las Vegas. It’s going to be fun to watch his progress. For sure, he will be the rage of fantasy baseball for those who decided to draft him knowing he would have to spend the start of the season in the minors.
He’s in the majors for the rest of his pro career now.
