One of the biggest grudge matches in the history of the UFC will finally take place Saturday in Atlanta. After injuries and postponements, Jon Jones and Rashad Evans meet off for the UFC light heavyweight title.
All the bad blood, smack talk, and build up is out of the way and this fight has been over a year in the making. The rest of the card is stacked as well and should provide an excellent night of fights.
Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans
If emotions don’t get the best of Jon, there is no way he can lose this fight. He can’t be held down for five rounds, he won’t be out-struck by Rashad and won’t get submitted. I’m going to play it safe and assume the champion will be well prepared by Greg Jackson and will fight this as any other normal fight.
Jones will pick apart Rashad standing, fend off takedowns and turn it on in the third or fourth round to stop him. Jon is just too good to lose to Rashad, but I am not interested in laying the -550. Jones TKO.
Che Mills vs. Rory MacDonald
Che Mills is coming off a very short knockout win over Chris Cope in his UFC debut, but will have his hands full with Rory MacDonald. The line is set around -400 for a reason and MacDonald will do whatever he wants to beat Mills. Rory’s striking is too good and he is too strong, big and fast for Mills. MacDonald TKO.
Ben Rothwell vs. Brendan Schaub
Brendan Schaub returns after his disappointing loss in Brazil to Minotauro Nogueira. Ben Rothwell is fighting for his UFC life after a brutal performance against Mark Hunt. I expect a majority of this fight to stay standing, but towards the end of the first round and into the second, the better conditioned and younger fighter to take it to the next level. Schaub’s speed and cardio will be the difference. Should be fun while it lasts! Schaub TKO.
Michael McDonald vs. Miguel Torres
The top bantamweight prospect fights the former WEC champion. Torres is very well rounded and has been working on his wrestling in his last two training camps. McDonald is very young, and possesses very good striking and great takedowns. The difference will be Torres’ experience and his active guard if taken down. He should be able to work enough from the bottom to earn a sweep or submission and win at least two rounds. Too much, too soon for McDonald. Torres by decision.
The UFC will be showing six fights on pay per view at 7 p.m., and four fights on FX (DirecTV ch. 248) at 5 p.m.
The FX card is filled with action fights. I like Travis Browne over Chad Griggs, Anthony Njokuani over John Makdessi, and Maximo Blanco over Marcus Brimage.
