The first UFC on Fuel event has major title implications February 14, 2012 3:06 AM by Louis D’Andrilli

The first UFC on Fuel event takes place in Omaha, Nebraska with a main event that has major title implications on the welterweight division.

A win for Jake Ellenberger all but guarantees a rematch with newly crowned interim champion Carlos Condit. A win for Diego Sanchez and he puts his name right into the mix at the top of the division while it sorts itself out waiting for Georges St. Pierre to return from injury.

Ellenberger/Sanchez: This is a great fight that seems to have flown under the radar. Ellenberger brings his great wrestling paired with his huge punching power against Sanchez who has great jiu jitsu and average striking. His two best attributes are determination and cardio as he will bring a pace Ellenberger has never faced.

If Diego can withstand the early barrage from Jake this will be a very interesting fight because Diego does not tire. Ultimately I think Ellenberger wins, but this price is awfully high considering what Sanchez brings to the table, as he also trains with Greg Jackson. ELLENBERGER by decision.

Dave Herman/Stefan Struve: If Struve has matured any, this should be an easy fight. Herman displayed terrible cardio and awful technique in his last fight. Struve needs to use his 6’10’’ inch frame to stay on the outside early and tire Herman out. At this point he could drag him to the mat and likely submit him.

Herman will be looking to stand and bang from the get go. His power mixed with Struve’s weak chin could spell disaster for Stefan. All early interviews with Struve have him saying he would definitely like to trade blows. HERMAN by TKO.

Ronny Markes/Aaron Simpson: A great fight put together by the UFC pits two middleweight prospects. Simpson has won three in a row, while Markes looked great in his UFC debut and pulled a big upset. Simpson has big power in his hands and great wrestling, while Markes brings his diversified Nova Unao striking mixed with his great jiu jitsu.

I would love to see Markes win, but Simpson will control this fight with his wrestling if it gets sticky for him on the feet. If you can find plus money, take it. SIMPSON by decision.

In the other two main card fights on Fuel TV, I like both favorites in Dillashaw and Miocic. Don’t forget to watch all the prelims on the UFC Facebook page.
