Alabama judge rules electronic bingo machines illegal February 13, 2012 10:05 AM by Staff & Wire Reports

A county judge has finally ruled that the electronic bingo machines that been operating in Alabama are definitely illegal.

Some 300 of the devices were confiscated in raids in Jefferson County last year. Law enforcement authorities raided five bingo halls last May and August in four separate communities. During the raids, the enforcement officials not only confiscated the machines but also grabbed some $4,260 in cash.

Judge Scott Vowell, who made the legal determination that the devices violated Alabama law, ordered the machines be turned over to the state. Also, he said the cash should also be turned over to the state since it was derived from an illegal activity.

The ruling was applauded by state law enforcement officials.

Atty. General Luther Strange said Vowell’s ruling upheld his belief that many electronic bingo machines operate as illegal slot machines.
