A heavyweight boxing trainer like no other, he will be missed February 07, 2012 3:05 AM by Vegas Runner

The entire boxing community suffered one of its greatest losses this past week in the passing of legendary trainer Angelo Dundee.

Born in the fighting city of Philadelphia, he went on to train the likes of Muhammed Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Carmen Basilio early on in his career. Then in the 90s, Dundee returned and won a title with George Foreman when he defeated Michael Moorer at the MGM Grand here in Las Vegas.

Lately, Dundee was hired to train Russell Crowe for his portrayal of James J. Braddock in the hit movie "Cinderella Man," and was also brought in as a consultant to Oscar De La Hoya when he trained for his fight with Manny Pacquiao.

He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and was present at Ali’s 70th birthday celebration in Louisville, Kentucky less than a month ago.

Many who have been around boxing for a long time believe Dundee was one of the best trainers of all time. He passed away on February 1 at 90 and will truly be missed by all.

The Calendar

The highly anticipated rematch between Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed.

What was ultimately meant to be one of his final sparring sessions in preparation for this bout, Berto injured the same bicep that has given him problems in the past. The injury suffered forced Berto to pull out and a new date has yet to be set.

Fortunately, February is expected to be an action packed month for boxing with Vitali Klitschko defending his WBC strap against Dereck Chisora, followed by a welterweight clash between Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana.

Then, over the next few months, fans and bettors alike will be treated to an entire feast of big fights.

In March, Wladimir Klitschko will put his heavyweight titles on the line against Jean Marc Mormeck and plans to fight three times in 2012.

Next up will almost definitely be the "mandatory" challenger Tony Thompson, who Wlad already beat by way of KO back in 2008. Let’s hope the opponent chosen for his third bout will go in with at least a puncher’s chance because the first two have absolutely none.

Also in March, Sergio Martinez meets Matthew Macklin at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Oddsmakers don’t give Macklin much of a shot since they’ve listed Martinez as a -1000 betting favorite.

After Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. took care of business this past weekend, Martinez was one of three boxers called out for a future bout. Though the level of competition is sure to improve for Chavez Jr. ahead, I don’t foresee his handlers putting him that far out in harms way just yet.

Not much in the way of a mega-fight is scheduled for April, but May brings back boxing’s biggest draw, Floyd Mayweather Jr. I try not to be someone who says "I told you so"…but I did say Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao would not be meeting this summer and the soonest possibility for the fight of all fights was in November.

Instead, it’ll be Miguel Cotto who gets a chance to erase the "0" from Mayweather’s perfect ledger. Cotto, on a three fight win streak and fresh off a victory against Antonio Margarito, turned down an offer to face Pacquiao in a rematch. He lost his WBO welterweight title to Pacquiao after being KO’d in the 12th round of their fight back in 2009.

Cotto, who is no longer with Top Rank, claimed he was interested in the rematch but would not do it at 147 lbs., after Pacquiao’s team refused to meet at a catch-weight. Cotto says at this point in his career, he is not willing to sacrifice his health to make the lower weight.

So on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Mayweather Jr. will be a heavy favorite to defeat Cotto. The early line has Mayweather -600 favorite and the Over/Under at 9½ rounds. The OVER is a 2-to-1 favorite, reflecting that oddsmakers expect the fight will be left in the hands of the judges.

With no chance of making a fight with Pacquiao happen on the pre-scheduled fight date, I can’t fault Mayweather for choosing Cotto. Granted, at age 31 Cotto’s best days in the ring are certainly behind him, but he still comes in with "name recognition" and a huge fan base.

As far as his three fight win streak, since losing to Pacquiao he’s disposed of Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga and Margarito, all by TKO. Those wins may help with "selling" the fight, but they do very little to make one believe Cotto will be able to make it four straight.

Pacquiao is scheduled to fight in June and promoter Bob Arum didn’t want to release the news until after the Super Bowl since he’s a big NY Giants fan and also didn’t want to take any attention away from Donaire and Chavez Jr. who both fought on Saturday night.

Prior to both Mayweather’s and Pacquiao’s last bouts I went on record stating the next opponent for Manny would be Timothy Bradley. I received some heat from followers on my Twitter (@vegasrunner) who argued Bradley wasn’t a big enough name to peak the interest of casual fans.

But I stuck to my guns knowing Bradley would have only turned down the kind of money offered to fight Amir Khan if something bigger was looming. A potential showdown against Pacquiao was definitely big enough to force Bradley into thinking further ahead.

I’m holding firm that Pacquiao and Bradley will meet in June in Las Vegas.

Gossip

Amir Khan seems to be losing his bid for a rematch with Lamont Peterson even after he was willing to concede a lot more in their current negotiations when compared to the initial deal for their first fight.

From what I gathered, a deal is being worked for a possible bout between Peterson and Juan Manuel Marquez for mid-July. It’s said that Peterson is willing to put his WBA/IBF junior welterweight titles on the line in what is expected to be a mega-fight in front of 40,000 spectators at Cowboys Stadium.
