We are now less than two weeks away from the highly anticipated rematch between Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto. Not only did their initial encounter warrant "Fight of the Year" consideration, it landed the winner a mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. In fact Mayweather was in attendance for that clash and, like most, expected Berto would get the victory and become his next opponent. In what ultimately became a war of attrition, it was Ortiz who showed he did possess the heart many questioned prior to his fight with Berto. There was no quit in Ortiz this time around and no question that he was a top contender once again. With no fight of any real consequence on tap for this coming weekend in boxing, I’m going to cross over into MMA in search of a wager. This Saturday night live from the United Center in Chicago, the UFC will be making its second attempt to appeal to an even wider audience by broadcasting on FOX rather than pay-per-view. In their FOX debut when only the main event was scheduled to be televised, Junior Dos Santos disposed of Cain Velazquez in the very first round. This time the UFC will be featuring four main card bouts, including the main event between Phil Davis (9-0 / 5-0 in UFC) and Rashad Evans (16-1-1 / 11-1-1 in UFC). Oddsmakers currently have Evans at -165, but we may see that start to drop since fans have shown a tendency to fade Evans in the past. The goal for both men is an eventual showdown with the UFC Light Heavyweight title holder, Jon Jones. It’s no secret that former training partners Jones and Evans have a genuine dislike for each other and an eventual meeting seemed unavoidable. They were scheduled to fight for Jones’ strap back in August at UFC 133 but a hand injury sustained during camp by the champion put the bout on hold. With the 205 lb title holder on the shelf, the UFC match-makers found a suitable replacement for Jones in the up and coming Phil Davis. It was meant to pit the veteran Evans with the younger Davis who was attempting to solidify himself in the light heavyweight title mix. But once again, an injury suffered by Davis left the UFC looking for another replacement and they turned to the always game, Tito Ortiz who was coming off a huge win against Ryan Bader as a +500 underdog. Rashad took care of Tito rather easily and he would finally get the chance to face his rival Jones and reclaim the title he once owned at UFC 140. This time it was Evans who was forced to pull out after a lingering thumb injury. Lyoto Machida filled in for Evans and Jon Jones went on to retain his belt, again proving to be amongst the best pound for pound in the sport. So now we’ve come full circle with Davis and Evans facing off in the main event on FOX 2. Both men are superior wrestlers with impressive collegiate careers. Evans was one of only three wrestlers to ever defeat the legendary Greg Jones while at Michigan St. Davis was a four time Division I All-American for Penn St. In fact, most would agree that as good of a wrestling pedigree as Evans may have, it’s Davis who will have the slight edge in that department. But let’s not forget that "MMA" stands for "Mixed Martial Arts" and without question, it’s Evans who will walk into the cage as the more well rounded fighter. His stand-up will offer the greatest edge against Davis. So far, Davis has never been taken down in his MMA career. Even though Evans averages 4.45 takedowns per 15 minutes, he won’t have an easy time breaking that amazing streak. But Evans has shown the ability to keep a fight standing by avoiding 63% of his opponents takedown attempts. I came into this fight hoping to find value on the underdog at what appeared to be a generous price. I have seen the evolution of Davis and he’s improved with each fight thus far. But, I believe this is way too early in his career to be facing an opponent that brings so much experience to the cage. Granted, the athleticism of Davis will be his biggest asset and he is huge for 205 lbs. But Evans broke into the UFC as a heavyweight on TUF so he’s been in there with bigger men before. Finally, Davis is coming in off a major knee injury and will that may play a role since he depends so much on his wrestling and speed. I was expecting to get +200 or better in order to take a real close look at the dog and determine if he’s got some bite. Instead, even at -165, Evans is being offered at a discount and I believe it has more to do with the fact he’s always been the "bad guy," than the true odds of him beating Davis. If the fight takes place, Evans will get my money. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao rumors Mayweather has abandoned Twitter for a phone call with Manny Pacquiao to discuss a possible mega-fight between the two. According to Floyd, he made it clear that he won’t be offering a 50-50 split but did promise the fight would result in more money for Pacquiao than he’s made in his entire career. Mayweather also urged Pacquiao to get on the same page with his promoter since he doesn’t call his own shots like Floyd does. According to Bob Arum, who does call the shots, for the fight to happen it can’t be on May 5 and it must be a 50-50 split. In short, like I previously stated, they are really no closer today than they were before.
