Good news for non-smokers. Cannery will open their enclosed Nonsmoking Slot Parlor next Wednesday, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
We can tell you it’s no fun playing the reels when you have to breathe in your neighbor’s exhalations. And, while we give credit to the great air filtering systems most casinos have, sometimes that’s just not enough.
Of course, there are a number of casinos with nonsmoking areas, but the Cannery’s is unique because it will be enclosed.
"As we became more aware of the many guests who wanted a smoke free environment, we started to look around for an area," Frank Vignola, vice president and general manager, told us. "While most casinos have a nonsmoking section located within the casino floor, we were fortunate, with a little juggling, to actually have an enclosed space big enough for the nonsmoking slot parlor. This will allow for a truly smoke free gaming experience."
The area is located where the poker room used to be (next to the race and sports book, across from Vino’s Ristorante) and will be equipped with over 100 slot machines in various denominations.
The poker room is now located next to the valet entrance (easy in and out) and has been furnished with an array of flat screen televisions.
"This is really a significant change that will provide a wonderful option for those who prefer a smoke free gaming experience and allows us to offer a comfortable gaming atmosphere for all our guests," added Vignola.
We know we’ll be breathing easier.
VETERANS HONORED: Las Vegas gave a big thank you to veterans last week, starting with one of the biggest parades in the nation Thursday morning in downtown Las Vegas.
Thousands of us lined up along the route, waving our flags and cheering, as the 120 entrants, including over 5,000 military veterans, passed by. America’s defenders rode nearly every mode of transportation, from horses to tanks to convertibles to motorcycles to trucks to wheelchairs. It was an awesome sight.

The Club at the Cannery Casino was the scene of the first "live" GI Jams concert. The website (www.GIJams.com) displays the musical talent of hundreds of veterans and active duty personnel from all branches of our armed forces. Founded by songwriters Denny Randell and Biddy Schippers, GI Jams strives "to give those in our military that are musically talented the opportunity to be heard and the chance to realize financial gain from their music and talent and maybe even go all the way."
Other weekend events included fireworks at Primm Valley Resorts, the "Wounded Warrior Benefit" at The Orleans showroom with Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, and the "Tribute to the Troops" concert with Terry Fator at the Mirage. The net proceeds from the show were donated to the new USO center at McCarran International Airport.
It was a rousing weekend and a good reminder of just how much we owe to these brave men and women who put their lives on the line so we can continue to enjoy our freedom in the greatest country in the world. Thank you.
See you around town.
