No smiles, only frowns at VictoryLand Casino September 06, 2010 10:40 AM by Ray Poirier

VictoryLand Casino in Montgomery, Alabama, is one of the few remaining greyhound racing facility in the country. But, its main reason for being is its 6,000 bingo machines.

Now that has ended. The Alabama Supreme Court has labeled the machines as illegal slot machines and has authorized the Governor’s Task Force to raid the track.

Management at the track responded by walling off the machines so that they are no longer visible to the general public. But that may not be enough to forestall a Task Force raid.

John Tyson, Task force commander, is on record as saying, "It is illegal to possess slot machines in Alabama, whether they are behind a wall or not."

The track’s lawyer, however, insists that "anyone who enters our private property will be subject to arrest."

On VictoryLand’s side is the county sheriff who laments that the task force is trying to usurp his authority. He had a judge’s order siding with him until the state Supreme Court ruled differently last week.

The live dog races and simulcast horse races attract a few players but not nearly the thousands who flocked to the track to play the electronic bingo machines.

As it stands, all gambling at the state’s privately-owned electronic bingo halls has ended. The only gambling permitted is at three casinos operated by the Poarch Creek Indians.
